SOCIAL STUDIES
"If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree." -Michael Crichton
About Social Studies
We currently use the Pearson MySocialStudies curriculum in Social Studies up to grade 5, and the Pearson MyWorldHistory curriculum for grade 6. For each chapter in Social Studies, students will have lessons to read and analyze, vocabulary words and concepts, and focus skills (such as reading maps or graphs).
Because the Social Studies curriculum is set up differently from Language Arts, there will be assessments on an irregular basis. These may include quizzes, tests, or projects related to the chapter or unit of study. These assessments will test the students' vocabulary, grasp of focus skills, and comprehension of reading material.
About International Fair Research Projects
Each year in Social Studies, students also choose one country to research for an individual, year-long project. Every month, students will complete short assignments about their country, such as creating a flag, listing the bodies of water, making a map, etc. At the end of the school year, students will be asked to put all of their information together on a poster to be displayed at the school. In addition, they will have a writing assignment related to their country of study.
Because there are so many countries in the world, students are not permitted to choose a country that has already been researched. During the first few weeks of school, Teacher Laurin will send home a list of countries that may NOT be chosen, as well some suggestions based on students' interests.
