About Language Arts
We currently use the Harcourt Journeys Common Core curriculum in Language Arts. Language Arts includes vocabulary words and strategies, comprehension skills, a weekly story to be read and analyzed, decoding, grammar, spelling words, and writing.
There will be a weekly assessment each Friday (unless moved by necessity). The assessment will test students on their vocabulary words and strategies, comprehension of the weekly story, decoding, and grammar. There is also a weekly spelling test on the same day. Once every unit, there will be an additional section on the assessment that tests students on Skills in Context- they will read new passages and apply what they've learned to answer questions about them.
As a part of their learning, students will be expected to read daily both in class and at home. Over the course of the school year, students will complete a Reading Passport; this is similar to a reading log, in which students will have to read a total of 30 books and write about each book after completing it. To make this process more enjoyable and to share what they have learned, students will complete monthly book report projects. Students will generally be allowed to read books of their own choosing, however book report projects may request a particular genre each month, such as a Biography or Mystery.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Annual School Spelling Bee in February. This process begins during the first few weeks of school, during which Teacher Laurin will send home individual spelling bee word lists based on a student's grade. In December, before Winter Break, each classroom (grades 1-6) will hold their own spelling bee, with the top two students moving on to the school level. Please check out the Spelling Bee tab at the top of this page for more information.
