Surfing the Internet can be an ocean of fun. But even the best surfers put safety first. Remember these tips while you’re riding the online waves, and you’ll be hangin’ ten in no time!
- Never give out personal information online. That includes your full name, passwords, home address or the name of your school, your friends’ names, and your telephone number. If you’re not sure what’s OK to give out online, ask your parents.
- Don’t believe everything you see online. Trust your instincts. If you think something is fishy, it probably is.
- If you see or experience something online that makes you uncomfortable, leave immediately and tell your parents.
- Never arrange an in-person meeting with someone you have met online.
- Never buy things online or enter online contests without first asking a parent’s permission.
- Ask your parents before downloading, opening, or sending e-mail attachments or computer programs. This includes photographs and other personal stuff!
- Don’t click on links inside e-mail messages from people you don’t know or trust.
- Respect others online and they will respect you.
- Always follow your family’s rules for using the Internet! Your parents know what’s best for you.
- Happy surfing!
